Archaeological Dig

Archaeological work, comprising a trench evaluation, was undertaken by AC archaeology during June 2017 in order to provide accompanying information for a proposed application for the extension to the cemetery of St Thomas a Becket’s Church on land off Dark Lane, Thorverton, Devon (NGR SS 9235 0216). The work was required following consultation with the Archaeology Officer, Devon County Council Historic Environment Team (hereafter DCCHET).

21.10.2020 An on-line lecture, by Paul Rainbird of the Devon Archaeological Society, took place on this date which provided an update on the Thorverton Community Archaeology Project. It was interesting to hear that some of the Beaker pottery fragments found during the 'dig' are thought to be 'gabbro', a rock not found locally and with the nearest found in the Lizard penninsula. The spelt samples and ring ditches found suggested that the settlement was Late Bronze Age - 1000 BC - rather than the Middle Neolithic Age - c. 3000 BC - as had been represented by other findings.

2020.12 The project pre-publication report was finalised and a copy can be obtained from the Clerk (too large to be uploaded to this website).
